And as a native Houstonian, I’ve been really proud of that,” says local musician and Bojangles Music School founder Shawn Parks, who cocreated Night for Guy. “So I figured, let’s try and do [a memorial show] here. Let’s kind of claim his death date, to some extent.”

And starting in the mid-1970s in Nashville, he made a name as a songwriter of uncommon poetry and depth. But between his youth on the Gulf Coast and his career in Nashville, Clark first wrote songs and performed at clubs in Houston.

    Last year Shawn Parks, owner of the Bojangles Music School, found himself frustrated after seeing tributes to the late, great musician Guy Clark in Austin and Nashville but not Houston, where Clark spent some formative years as a songwriter. So Parks created A Night for Guy, during which about a dozen great local performers — including Matt Harlan, the Mighty Orq, John Egan — each played a pair of Clark songs. A few fun surprises also took place, including two songs performed by famed attorney Dick DeGuerin and an unannounced appearance by Lyle Lovett.
